What is Carbon Black?
The term Carbon Black stands for industrial carbon black. It is specifically produced elemental carbon in the form of colloidal particles with a size of approx. 10 nm to approx. 500 nm.
Carbon black consists of more than 96 percent amorphous carbon and small amounts of oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. Most of these elements are concentrated at the surface. The oxygen content of subsequently oxidized carbon black can be as high as 15 percent.
How carbon black is produced
Carbon black is produced by incomplete combustion processes or thermal decomposition of gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons under controlled conditions, such as heavy oil products like tar. It is available as a black, fine, highly dusting powder or as beads.
Depending on the production process, the different types of carbon black can differ in various properties such as size, porosity or surface texture.
Scientific research projects are also working on developing processes to reduce the greenhouse gas CO2, making it possible to convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into high-purity carbon black.
Applications of carbon black
Industrial carbon black is used in a wide range of industries, including electronics, printing and construction. A characteristic feature of carbon black is that it can improve the optical as well as the electrical and physical characteristics of materials and is thus used to optimize product properties.
