Container

What is a container?

A container is a packaging, loading and trading unit commonly used in the packaging industry for a group of similar or different products or goods that are combined and packaged together.

Origin of term

The term “bundle” originally comes from the textile industry and refers to a certain countable quantity of similar threads connected together. Several bundles together are a reel, several reels in turn are called a skein; several skeins make up one piece.

In the transportation of beverages, the term was used in earlier times as a unit of measurement for liquids such as beer or wine, which were filled into bottles and tied together into units (containers). Nowadays, in the wine industry, the term container is used to describe wine that is filled in barrels or tanks in unspecified quantities. Small containers are containers in which smaller quantities of liquid are stored.

The technical term is also used in the construction industry. Here, a bundle refers to adjacent components that are linked to each other via a common connection, such as folded roof tiles or pairs of rafters.

The general cargo transported as a package is referred to internationally as “Kollo”, plural: Kollos or Kolli.

Container stands for:

  • Package, the entirety of packaged goods and packaging
  • package, the package to be transported
  • packaging consisting of one piece, as empty packaging

Differentiation from other units

Unpackaged goods such as sand or coal are referred to as bulk or suction goods. They cannot be grouped into containers. Liquid loads and gases that are not stored in a container but are pumped into a transport vehicle cannot be transported as containers either.

What types of containers are there?

  • RAKO container
  • E2 container
  • BN container
  • U-container
