Octabins

What are octabins?

Bulk goods optimally packaged

Octabins are a heavy-duty packaging solution for the transportation and storage of bulk goods such as granulates or regrind. Made from sturdy corrugated cardboard, the octagonal packaging consists of a base, walls and lid and can be erected manually. Corrugated board of stable quality is used, e.g. with a so-called 3-wall BC flute.

Due to the low weight of the hard-wearing packaging, this packaging solution is used at Ebbecke Verfahrenstechnik to reduce CO² emissions.

Dimensions of an octabin

The basic dimensions are usually 800 mm × 1200 mm, so that the octabin can be transported on a Euro pallet. Due to their size and the weight of the filling, octabins are glued several times with special glue and securely stapled with wire.

The dimensions of octabins are based on the dimensions of standard pallet sizes, as they are transported on pallets for storage. However, individual sizes and special shapes are also possible thanks to corrugated cardboard production. The production of special designs usually involves additional tooling costs, which are no longer incurred for standard designs.

Depending on the design, octabins can hold up to 1.2 tons of weight and can also be double-stacked. When stacking, however, care must be taken to ensure that the lower octabin is completely filled, as otherwise the free space under the lid (head space) could lead to stability problems. The head space is the area under the lid that is not filled. The recommendation when stacking octabins is to fill them leaving a maximum of 10 – 15 cm headspace.
