The principle of spray drying
In spray drying, droplets are sprayed or a liquid is atomized into a temperature-controlled room. The dried particles are collected at the end and can be further processed.
Spray first, then dry
Before the liquid starting material is dried, it is first converted into droplet form during spray drying. This is done with the help of an atomizer, which distributes the atomized material evenly into the drying medium – usually tempered air in a spray tower. The liquid to be dried has a larger surface due to the drop shape, which can accelerate the drying process enormously.
The advantages of spray drying
- The liquid starting material is very quickly dried by being converted into the drop shape and the resulting increased surface area
- The dried material has a relatively uniform particle size and is easy to fill or further process
- Temperature-sensitive material can be dried due to the physical effect of evaporative cooling
- The dried particles have a large surface and can in turn be quickly dissolved in liquids
